There are unique stories of the “One Commune, One Product” (OCOP) program in Nam Sach district, Hai Duong province, which are closely associated with the local culture, agriculture, and people.
Preserving traditional culture
At present, cultural and tourism-related OCOP products in Hai Duong province remain limited, with only a few localities possessing such offerings. Nam Sach district alone has two 4-star OCOP products, namely Tram Gian pagoda in An Binh commune and the temple of Dual Doctoral Laureate Mac Dinh Chi in Nam Tan commune. Both sites have been recognized as national historical and cultural relics and provincial tourist destinations.
Nam Sach district is renowned as a land of scholarly traditions in Hai Duong province, and Long Dong temple is one of the landmarks that embodies this legacy.
Located in Long Dong Hamlet, Nam Tan commune, the birthplace of Dual Doctoral Laureate Mac Dinh Chi, the ancient temple is dedicated to three distinguished scholars in Vietnamese history: Mac Dinh Chi (1272 -1346), Doctoral Laureate Mac Hien Tich, and his brother, Doctor Mac Kien Quan.
The temple also worships heroic martyr Mac Thi Buoi, who sacrificed her life on April 23, 1951 in the resistance war against the French colonialists.
Similarly, the 4-star OCOP product Tram Gian pagoda in An Dong hamlet, An Binh commune, preserves significant cultural values of the local community.
Dating back about 1,000 years, the pagoda was once a major Buddhist center, where thousands of Buddhists came to study scriptures. Today, the pagoda still retains its unique architecture and numerous valuable antiquities.
Refining tradition to build reputation
Coming from a family with a long-standing tradition of rice wine making, Tran Dinh Hieu (born in 1975) from Nam Sach township was drawn to the craft at an early age.
Determined to elevate the local product, he studied new techniques from other localities and combined them with rice - the "grain of heaven" - in his native land of Nam Sach to produce the now-famous Hop Village Rice Wine. The product has achieved 4-star OCOP recognition and enjoys strong consumer trust both within and beyond the province.
As the owner of one of the two largest egg-laying chicken farms in Nam Sach, Nguyen Dinh Tuan (born in 1963) from Chi Doan hamlet, Cong Hoa commune, reports that his farm is currently raising around 22,000 laying hens and 12,000 breeding chickens, producing nearly 20,000 eggs daily. His chicken eggs were awarded 3-star OCOP status in 2023.
After approximately five years of implementing the OCOP program, by early 2025, Nam Sach district had had 56 products recognized under various OCOP star ratings, including five proposed for 5-star certification, 15 at four stars, and 36 at three stars.
In addition, dozens of other products from businesses, cooperatives, and individual producers are in the process of being refined and evaluated for OCOP classification.
Nam Sach is also among the few localities in the province where every commune and township has at least one OCOP product.
Like Hop Village Rice Wine or Dinh Tuan Chicken Eggs, all OCOP products from Nam Sách are the results of producers refining tradition, experience, and business ethics to deliver quality products to consumers.
The People’s Committee of Nam Sach district has decided to spend nearly 1.6 billion VND to implement the OCOP program in 2025, including the standardization of 20 products, 17 new and three renewed registrations, covering the fields of product development consulting, dossier preparation, packaging design, product quality analysis, barcodes and traceability labels, and brand protection.
