Hai Duong expects a new step in freight transport by turning Cao Xa railway station into an international one.
Vietnam Railways Corporation proposes Cao Xa station in Cam Giang district become an international one due to its connection and space advantages
There are three rail routes passing through Hai Duong province.
Gia Lam – Hai Phong route is 45.3 km long with Cam Giang, Hai Duong, and Phu Thai stations for passengers and Cao Xa, Tien Trung, Lai Khe, and Pham Xa stations for freight and sidings in Hai Duong.
Kep – Ha Long route, 13 km long, goes through Co Thanh station in Hai Duong.
Chi Linh – Pha Lai, 15.5 km long, is a specialized route mainly used to transport materials for Pha Lai Thermal Power Plant.
The volume of goods transported by rail in Hai Duong was 5,056 tons in 2022 and 2,608 tons in the first five months of 2023.
However, goods in Hai Duong have not yet been directly imported or exported by rail.
The province is one of leading localities in producing and processing imports and exports in Vietnam with 23 industrial parks and 58 industrial clusters.
There is great demand for freight transport in the province, which, however, has been mostly done by road for years, leading to congestions and accidents, assessed Vietnam Railway Corporation (VNR).
Meanwhile, railways enable safer and much cheaper conveyance of heavy and large freight than other modes of transport, according to VNR.
The corporation believes that railway development will help reduce pressure on road transport as well as ensuring traffic order and safety.
Hai Duong and Cam Giang stations will also be upgraded together with the opening of international routes at Cao Xa station
That is the reason why VNR proposed international transport routes at Cao Xa station in Cam Giang district, Hai Duong province, last June.
The station has connection advantages and enough area for investment in technical infrastructure, according to VNR.
It is located at km 50+870 of Ha Noi – Hai Phong rail route, which is linked with the 9m wide district road 194B.
The road, meanwhile, connects the industrial parks of Dai An, Cam Dien, Phuc Dien, Tan Truong… and Dai An intersection of national highway 5 to Tien Kieu river port.
VNR aimed to renovate Cao Xa station with specific functional subdivisions for imports, exports, customs supervision, loading, unloading, etc., including a 10,000 m2 container storage.
Once international rail routes are established in Hai Duong, goods can be directly transported from the province to China, Europe, Central Asia, etc. without transit at seaports.
Time for transport of goods to Russia and the EU by rail will also shorten by two thirds compared to transport by sea.
Tan Huong Agricultural Products Processing JSC. in Cam Giang district has taken products to Southern provinces by rail, which cost it the least among all means of transport.
International transport from Cao Xa station will help reduce transportation costs for businesses by 2-3%, said director of the company Nguyen Duc Doan.
“International rail routes at Cao Xa station will help enterprises take more initiative in transporting goods and importing and exporting agricultural products from and to China,” said Doan.
