Typhoon Koinu, carrying winds of 183 km/hour, brought heavy rains to waters northeast of the Philippines’ Luzon Island at 7 am on Tuesday before beginning its journey toward the East Sea.
Koinu was moving northwest at about 10 kilometers per hour and could be centered in northern Luzon on Wednesday morning, packing intense wind gusts.
The storm will likely move west-northwest and head toward the southern coast of China's Taiwan.
It is forecast to enter the northeastern part of the East Sea and move along the coast of China’s Guangdong province on Thursday morning, the National Center for Hydro-Meteorological Forecasting said.
The typhoon is expected to unleash increasingly strong winds in the northeast of the East Sea starting from Tuesday night.
The National Steering Committee for Natural Disaster Prevention and Control on Tuesday told coastal localities from northern Quang Ninh province to south-central Khanh Hoa province to keep a close watch on Koinu and notify fishing boats and vessels of the storm to take precautionary measures.
Authorities in these localities should also prepare for rescue operations.
