Ung Hoe commune in Ninh Giang district, Hai Duong province, used to be a low-lying land with only one crop a year. Local people had to receive aid from the Government every year though having large land.

After many areas of Dai Xuan Cooperative in the commune had been seriously damaged because of floods in 1962, an anti-flooding movement vibrantly took place. Officials and civilians in the commune were determined not to let their efforts be submerged again.

Ung Hoe became one of two typical examples in flood prevention in the province, together with Hiep Luc commune in Ninh Giang district.

President Ho Chi Minh then visited the commune on July 26, 1962. He encouraged and reminded officials and civilians in the commune that the resistance war would surely succeed, and that local people should try to cope with natural disasters and be active in production to achieve the success.

Ung Hoe commune took advantage of favorable conditions to continuously launch in-field irrigation campaigns, dug and build key irrigation networks.

From having to be subsidized by the Government, Dai Xuan became self-sufficient and even sold part of its production to the State.

Ung Hoe commune was honored to be awarded flags for a leading unit in agricultural emulations by the Government in 1964 and 1965.

Ung Hoe commune is increasingly spacious

In a complimentary letter sent to members of Dai Xuan Cooperative in February 1968, Uncle Ho wrote: “From a riverside area with only one crop a year in most fields, Dai Xuan has managed to improve the fields to develop comprehensive agricultural production, increase crops, achieve high rice productivity and good animal husbandry for the past few years… Members’ lives are guaranteed. This is a worthy contribution to the resistance war against US aggressors to save the country…”

Uncle Ho's encouragement is always an honor and a great motivation for people in the commune to overcome all difficulties to develop their homeland.

All visitors to the present-day Ung Hoe are impressed with the new-style rural area’s appearance, with wide and long concrete roads throughout villages, many multistory houses, and farms interspersed with orchards.

“My native land has got a total face-lift. The biggest change is the increasingly-improved life of local people. Many families earn from several hundred to billions of VND each year,” said 88-year-old Pham Van Lam, former leader of Production Team No. 7 of Dai Xuan Cooperative.

Low-lying areas difficult for cultivation were turned into concentrated aquaculture and caltrop growing ones with high economic efficiency.

Many households in the commune merged fields into large ones, on which mechanization is applied from tilling to harvest.

As a result, the local production value per one hectare of agricultural and aquaculture land reached 155 million VND in 2022, up 12 million VND compared to 2019.

The present-day Ung Hoe commune were merged from three communes of Ung Hoe, Ninh Hoa and Quyet Thang.

“Ung Hoe commune faced a lot of difficulties after mergence. However, the locality gathered all resources to finish new-style rural building in 2021 and is striving to become an advanced new-style rural area within this year,” said Vu Van Tinh, Secretary of the commune Party Committee.
