Hai Duong is located on the main traffic axis of the northern key economic region, with expressways and national highways running through the province.

Geographical location

Hai Duong is a province in the Red River Delta, bounded by Bac Ninh province on the northwest, Bac Giang province on the north, Quang Ninh province on the northeast, Hai Phong city on the east, Thai Binh province on the south and Hung Yen province on the west.

Hai Duong city is the administrative center of the province, 57 km west of Ha Noi capital city and 45 km east of Hai Phong city. Hai Duong is 85 km from Noi Bai International Airport (Ha Noi), 60 km from Cat Bi Airport (Hai Phong), 55 km from Hai Phong port and 72 km from Cai Lan port.

Hai Duong is located on the main traffic axis of the northern key economic region, with Ha Noi – Hai Phong and Noi Bai – Ha Long expressways, national highways 5 and 18 running through the province. In addition, national highways 37 and 38, which cross Hai Duong, are also main traffic routes linking the northern midland mountainous area with the northern coastal area.

The geographical location enables Hai Duong to be a focal point of economic and commercial exchanges and transshipment of goods between Ha Noi capital region and Hai Phong – Quang Ninh coastal economic corridor and directly connect the economic development space of five out of seven localities in the northern key economic region, namely Hai Duong, Hai Phong, Quang Ninh, Bac Ninh and Hung Yen.

The geographical location is also a favourable condition for the province to promote the development of supporting industries and, at the same time, optimize logistic expenses for enterprises thanks to multimodal transport of goods.

Topography


Hai Duong's topography is characterized by both hilly areas and plains

Hai Duong covers an area of 1,668.39 sq.km, divided into two regions, hilly areas and plains.

The hilly areas are located in the north of the province, accounting for about 11 percent of the natural area, suitable for the cultivation of fruit, timber and short-term industrial trees.

The plains make up 89% of the natural area with fertile soil, appropriate for various types of plants with many crops a year.

Climate

Hai Duong belongs to the monsoon tropical zone. The average temperature was 25.3 degree Celsius in 2019, with a total of 1,549 hours of sunshine. The average rainfall stood at 104.6 mm per month and the average humidity was 84 percent in the year.

Resources

The main minerals of Hai Duong are:

- Cement limestone in Kinh Mon with reserves of 200 million tons, 90 – 97 percent of which are CaCO3, enough to produce 4 – 5 million tons of cement/year for 50 – 70 years.

- Kaolin in Kinh Mon and Chi Linh with reserves of 400,000 tons, including 0.8 – 1.7 percent of Fe2O3 and 17 – 19 percent of Al2O3, providing raw materials for porcelain production.

- Good quality refractory clay in Chi Linh with reserves of 8 million tons, containing 23.5 – 28 percent of Al2O3 and 1.2 – 1.9 percent of Fe2O3, providing raw materials for refractory brick production.

- Bauxite in Kinh Mon with reserves of 200,000 tons, including 46.9 – 52.4 percent of Al2O3, 21 – 26.6 percent of Fe2O3 and 6.4 – 8.9 percent of SiO2.
