Tranh Temple Festival named national intangible cultural heritage

The recognition is the result of efforts of Party committees, authorities, and people of Ninh Giang district in preserving and promoting local cultural heritage values.

The Ministry of Culture, Sports, and Tourism has decided to add the Tranh Temple Festival to the national list of intangible cultural heritage.

The decision was announced at the opening ceremony of this year’s festival on March 1 in Tranh Xuyen hamlet, Dong Tam commune, Ninh Giang district, Hai Duong province.

The recognition certificate was handed over to representatives of Dong Tam commune by Deputy Minister of Culture, Sports, and Tourism Trinh Thi Thuy.

It was an event of great significance, affirming the efforts of Party committees and authorities at all levels and people of Ninh Giang district in preserving and promoting local cultural heritage values.

The long-standing Tranh temple in Dong Tam commune was classified as a national historical and cultural relic by the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism in 2009.

The temple still preserves many cultural values with a lot of annual events, including festivals, which have been handed down through generations.

The main festivals of the temple used to take place every lunar February and August before the August Revolution in 1945.

The events and festivals at Tranh temple show aspirations and cultural creativity of the local community.

The conservation and promotion of cultural heritage values, including those at Tranh temple, have revived artistic and cultural values of the long-standing countryside, contributing to preserving the national cultural identity.

After the opening ceremony, delegates, locals, and visitors offered incense in commemoration of Quan Lon Tuan Tranh, who is worshipped at the temple.

This year’s Tranh Temple Festival is taking place on March 1, 4, and 5 with many special activities.

There were a water procession, sacrifice and incense offering, a musical show, the opening ceremony, etc. on March 1.

Folk games like earthen pot smashing, pig catching, wrestling, thin bridge crossing, cock fighting, and clay firecracker playing are scheduled for March 4 and 5.
