Hai Duong table tennis player wins first Southeast Asian youth men's singles gold for Vietnam
The gold medal helped the Vietnamese youth table tennis team win an official spot at the Asian Youth Table Tennis Championship 2024 for the first time.
Nguyen Duy Phong, a player from Hai Duong province, brought home the first U19 men's singles gold medal at the Southeast Asian Youth Table Tennis Championship, which has freshly wrapped up in Malaysia.
Phong snatched the medal after defeating Singaporean rival Nicholas Tan with a total score of 4-1 in the final.
This is also the first Southeast Asian youth men's singles gold of Vietnam in general and Hai Duong in particular.
The result helped the Vietnamese youth table tennis team win an official spot at the Asian Youth Table Tennis Championship 2024 for the first time.
Phong and Dinh Quang Minh, another player from Hai Duong, also grabbed the men's doubles silver medal, according to the Hai Duong Table Tennis Federation.
In the end, the Vietnamese national youth table tennis team won three gold, three silver, and four bronze medals.
Nguyen Duy Phong and Dinh Quang Minh were discovered and trained at the Hai Duong Sports Training and Competition Center.
They have participated in all domestic tournaments as members of the Hai Duong table tennis team.
