The Vietnam Logistics Business Association (VLA) and a number of businesses exporting lychee to the US and Canada have recently had a field trip to a GlobalGAP-oriented lychee production area in Thanh Quang commune, Thanh Ha district, Hai Duong province.

The units hailed the local early lychee production process in terms of organizing cultivation and keeping electronic logs for traceability and believed in lychee quality.

DAS Sustainable Agricultural Ecosystem Cooperative in Binh Thuan province is expected to export 5 – 10 containers of Thanh Ha lychees to the US and 400 tons to Canada by air this May 20, according to director general of the cooperative Nguyen Hoang Van.

This is the first time the cooperative has come to Hai Duong to learn about lychee export.

Lychees must have GlobalGAP certification and be irradiated according to importers’ regulations to be exported to the two markets.

Therefore, Israeli experts will go to Thanh Ha in early April to guide farmers on how to preserve lychees for export.

The VLA will also support Hai Duong with preservation technology to extend the life of fresh lychees and shorten customs clearance procedures.

Hai Duong has 8,850 ha of lychees this year, including 2,700 ha of early lychees and 6,150 ha of main-crop ones, according to the provincial Department of Agriculture and Rural Development.

Thanh Ha district is home to 1,700 ha of early lychees, such as u trung trang, u trung gai, u hong, and tau lai.

Early lychees are expected to be harvested from this May 15 – 20 with an estimated output of 35,000 – 40,000 tons.
