A leader of Nguyen Trai Senior High School for Gifted Pupils on May 26 evening said the exam of Dao Duy Anh (12th informatics grader) was one of six outstanding entries chosen by the organizers of the 2021 Asia-Pacific Informatics Olympiad (APIO) to vie for awards and won a bronze medal.

This was his excellent achievement because this year’s contest featured many strong national and regional rivals.

Since 2013, the year Vietnam first took part in the contest, this has been the third time Hai Duong has had a prize winning pupil.

Before Duy Anh, Nguyen Phan Quang Minh, another pupil of Nguyen Trai Senior High School for Gifted Pupils, consecutively snatched two silver medals at the contest in 2013 and 2014.

APIO is organized similarly to the International Olympiad in Informatics (IOI) for delegations within the Asian and Western Pacific regions. The contest was first held in Australia in 2007.

This year’s contest was hosted by Indonesia in two days, May 22 and 23, with more than 900 contestants from 35 countries and territories in the Asian and Western Pacific regions. Because of the Covid-19 epidemic, the teams attended the contest online.

The Vietnamese national team consisted of 15 members. It grabbed two golds, one silver, and three bronzes.

In the 2020 – 2021 school year, Nguyen Trai Senior High School for Gifted Pupils has two pupils in the national teams to attend Olympiads.

Apart from Duy Anh, the other one is Phan Duc Nam Phuong, a 12th chemistry grader. Reportedly, Nam Phuong will compete in the International Chemistry Olympiad scheduled for this July with his team.
